About the CFT Qualification

Are there any prerequisites for doing this course such as GMAT, GPA scores, UCAS points or degree grades?

There are no prerequisites.

Is the qualification accredited?

The CFT is a CFA accredited training provider, we are also registered with the CPD standards office and grant CPD points upon the completion of each level (details below).

Will this course teach me how to code in languages such as Java, Python and .net?

We will cover elements of the above programming languages, specifically in Level 3. You do not need to have any programming experience before starting the CFT.

What roles in technology can I build skills for?

Undertaking the CFT will give you valuable transferable skills which can be utilized in a financial firm’s technology department and the ever-growing Fintech sector. Some of the roles which you can build skills directly for are as follows: Senior Manager, Project Manager, Business Analyst, Developer, Support Analyst, Research Analyst.

Should I be working in a specific role whilst studying the CFT?

Many of the students who undertake the CFT are working full time in technology roles. Working in a technology role will supplement your learning experience. However, if you are not currently working in financial technology, the CFT gives you the skills and knowledge you need to get a role in this sector. Regardless of your current occupation, the CFT will give you the edge in your career.

Are candidates exempt from certain levels due to past experience or other qualifications?

We are unable to grant anyone exemption from levels. If a candidate is already operating at that level, then the exam is a great way of receiving formal recognition.

Yes, the qualification is CPD accredited allowing you to earn 40 points per level.

Can I use the letters CFT after my name?

Yes, once you pass all three levels, you can use the designation CFT after your name.

How long does it take to study for each level?

Depending on your existing knowledge it can take between 100-150 hours of study.

What learning materials do I receive?

All of your training is delivered through our own Learning Management System. The training materials consist of on-demand lectures, presentations, excel exercises, sample questions, downloadable e=books and an online help desk.

How can I access the e-Learning?

Through any internet browser and also through iOS and Android apps. You progress is synchronised across all devices


About the Examination

How often are the exams?

Every six months, in March and September. The next examinations are on 17th September 2018 and 18th March 2019.

What do I need to score in order to pass a level?

You need to score at least 70% on both the finance and technology papers in order to pass.

What is the format for the exam?

There are two examinations for each level. Both the finance and technology exam for each level consists of three modules. Note, some modules are larger than others but they still have the same number of questions in the exam. The following table explains the examination format for each level:

Each paper is 2 hours long and consists of 105 multiple choice questions. All finance modules are in bold.

Will the CFT notify my employer of exam results and completion of Levels?

We do not have any direct contact with your employer, unless they have registered you for the CFT on your behalf.

What happens if I fail one of the papers and pass the other?

You will have failed that level. However, you will only need to resit the exam that you have failed.

How long does it take after the examination date to get my results?

You will receive preliminary results as soon as you complete the examination. These will be confirmed within 4 weeks of the exam date.

What happens when I pass a level?

You will be able to move on to the next level. Details of how to move to the next level will be provided with your result.

What happens if I fail a level?

You will be able to resit the exam. The cost of a resit is 40% of the current qualification fee.  Details of how to resit will be provided with your result.

Can I defer the exam?

When you sign up you will be given the option to choose when to sit your exam. You will also select the time zone you are registered in as that will affect the time of day you undertake the exam. You can change this date once at no extra cost, by sending us an email at, up to two months before the examination. There are no deferrals within two months of the examination date.

Refund Policy

A full refund of your enrollment and registration fees is available within fourteen (14) days of payment if you change your mind. Due to fluctuating exchange rates outside our control, we cannot guarantee that the exact amount paid will be the same amount refunded to you in your local currency.

All other administrative fees are nonrefundable, even in the event of a medical condition or other extreme circumstance. Enrollment and administrative fees are non-transferable.

Taking The Examination

How do I take the exam?

All of the exams are delivered online on the given examination date. To take the examination you will need:

  • A quiet room where you will not be interrupted
  • A computer (desktop or laptop) with internet access
  • A webcam

You will be given the details of a remote proctor/invigilator sometime before the exam, you register with them, choose your exact time and then take the exam on that date as instructed. You can check if your hardware meets the required standards by going here:

Can I use a tablet such as an iPad?

No, you must use a computer running either Windows or Mac operating system

Do you install anything on my computer to do the remote proctoring?

No, a one-time, run only, applet needs to be run each time you connect. You download the packet, open it to run, and initiate the session

I think running this applet will not get past my company firewall or will breach company policy

Please get in touch if you think this is the case. We have lots of experience of getting the service whitelisted in many firms around the world, and we can usually find a solution. Most people prefer to take the examination at home with their own equipment where this isn’t a problem

What equipment can I use other than my computer?

Full details are provided ahead of your exam. The requirements are that you have a clear desk however, during the examination you may have a calculator, blank paper and pens/pencils on the desk. You may also use a blank excel spreadsheet if you wish

What windows can I open on my computer?

You may have one instance of a browser open with two tabs, your Learning Management System (Litmos LMS) and a connection to the remote invigilator (ProctorU). You may also have a blank excel spreadsheet to use for any calculations. You may not have any other applications or windows open such as an online calculator, foreign language dictionary, course materials, etc.

How do you know it is me taking the exam and not someone else?

You will be required to register an appropriate form of identification (details given as to what is acceptable) you will show that ID at the start of the examination to the proctor/invigilator

Can’t people just cheat?

The invigilation company we use has ran over 2,000,000 examinations and has developed sophisticated methods to ensure the credibility of this method in proctoring/invigilation
